Welcome back, everyone!

We had our first meeting of the Spring 2013 semester on February 12th. If you were not able to make the meeting, here’s a review of what we talked about.

Volunteer Opportunity:

Jeevan has asked us to help with GeoSymposium this year. GeoSymposium is on Friday, April 12th, 2013. GeoSymposium is the Geoscience department’s own small scientific conference in which students are able to present their current research and receive feedback from professors and professionals from companies such as Exxon Mobile, Barrick Mining, the Water District, and others.

In return for helping, Jeevan was thinking of getting field notebooks and donating them to us, or if you have any other ideas for stuff that would be useful to undergraduate students, let me know and I will ask him about it.

He needs help with the following activities:

  • Setting up in SEB the day of the symposium
  • Clean up after the symposium
  • Putting the programs together
  • And also to help carry things when Maria purchases materials, food, etc.

If you can help with these activities, please send us an email at geoclub.unlv@gmail.com stating what you would like to do, and we will be sure to send you more information.

Other news:

  • We are going to update the website, and make it easier for you to navigate, so please bear with us as we make improvements. https://geoscienceclub.wordpress.com/
  • For hikes and other activities, we will write announcements on the whiteboard in the undergraduate research room (the lounge), located downstairs across from the office in LFG, also if you are planning on going on a hike and would like some company, send us an email and we will forward it to everyone in GeoClub.
  •  All meetings this semester will be on Tuesdays at 2:30 (not every week, we will email you when they will be)
  •  Also, like us on Facebook if you’d like! http://www.facebook.com/pages/GeoClub/271189702891273
  • Remember, if there is a hike you’d like to do, tell us! We’ll email members and set up a date to go.
Please email us if you have any questions. Thanks!
Best regards,
Renee (GeoClub Officer)

End of Semester Activities

At the meeting on April 18th, 2012 we discussed some ofhte upcoming activities and what’s been going on with tshirts and the Zion trip. Here is a complete review:

  • We will be having a potluck picnic social on May 4 (view the events calender for details). See our event on facebook here. Please RSVP to our event, and sign up to bring food in the LFG office.
  • The new Rock Auction is up and running. Check them out and bid on them! The cabinet they are located in is in LFG on the north side by the vending machine.
  • Another hike has been planned as well. It will be on Sunday, April 29th. Check our events calender for details. We will be ordering tshirts shortly. If you want to know what the tshirt design looks like, email us at: geoclub.unlv@gmail.com
  • Also, we will be having a fundraiser at thePanda Express on campus. Here’s how it works: Panda Express gives us flyers to hand out to everyone (but we cannot pass them out near the student union). Then, people go to Panda Express and when they pay they present the flyer and a percentage of their purchase goes to GeoClub!
  • We have decided to postpone the Zion trip until the fall, when we have more funds and better weather. Give us suggestions on where you like to go during this trip. If you have any questions, please email us.
  • Finally, because some of the officer’s are graduating, we are asking for members to apply. So, if you would like to be a GeoClub officer, please email us and we will send you the application. Thank-you!!!

A (Long Overdue) Club Update

The past month has been a busy one for everyone involved within the Geology Department. Between Geosymposium (which was a huge success) and finals coming, everyone has been very busy. However, we are proud to announce that we now have both buttons and bumper stickers available for purchase. We will be adding t-shirts to that list very shortly. We will also be talking about what’s going on with the Zion trip and about a final hiking trip that is in the process of being planned.

GeoClub along with AEG has decided to host a potluck on May 4th at Sunset Park. Please see one of the officers for more information.

For more information on this, please check out our facebook page here.

Our next meeting will be on April 18th at 5:15 PM in LFG 105. Hope to see you there!

02/15/2012 Meeting Review

Hello everyone! Our first meeting was on Wednesday, February 15th. In case you missed it, here is what we discussed:

  • We discussed several locations to go on our camping trip- Great Basin, Yosemite, or Zion. Also, we will be taking the trip sometime at the end of Spring Break.
  • We also voted to go on a hike once the weather get warmer. Mary Jane Falls or Bristle Pine was suggested.
  • Volunteer work was also discussed. We will pick a date to join Lake Mead’s Operation Zero- in which a group of 5-10 members will take a boat out to a cove and clean up trash for 2-3 hours. For more information, go here: http://www.nps.gov/lake/supportyourpark/oz.htm
  • Also, we need to start fundraising. We discussed a bake sale, the mineral auction, restaurants (in which restaurants give us flyers which we pass out and 15% of their purchase goes to the club), and tshirts.
  • Dues are $10. In order to attend or go on trips, you MUST pay.

If you have any questiosn regarding the meeting, please email geoclub.unlv@gmail.com .
